How Porcelain Veneers Can Improve Your Smile

prosthodontics

People who have bright, healthy smiles just love to show it off. However, this is not the case for some people. Smiling is the last thing some people want to do in Los Angeles if they have cracked, chipped, damaged or crooked teeth. If you’re one of these people, don’t worry as there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. You’ll be able to show off your smile regardless of the condition of your teeth with the help of porcelain veneers. Continue reading to learn more about porcelain veneers.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are slim pieces of porcelain that are moulded to fit the front of your teeth. These veneers are very strong and durable. They are also made to match the shade and color of your teeth for a natural appearance.

To prepare a patient’s teeth, a dentist has to remove about a millimeter of the enamel from each tooth. After that, the dentist will get an impression of the inside of the patient’s mouth, which is then used to form a mold. The mold is then sent to a laboratory where a technician creates the custom veneers.

Will veneers work for me?

If you’re someone who has decaying, discolored, chipped or misaligned teeth, then you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Veneers are also great for people who have a slight gap in between two of their teeth, mild crowding and bite-related issues. Make sure to talk about porcelain veneers with your dentist. If they’re able to work for you, why not be apart of the design process?

Tell your dentist about what you would like corrected and what you want to have in your brand new smile. If possible, you’ll be able to see a preview if your dentist has cosmetic imaging.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Just like with every cosmetic dental procedure, there are advantages and disadvantages.

Here are the advantages:

  • The tooth structure is hardly lost.
  • No anesthesia is involved in the procedure.
  • The materials that are used for veneers provide greater resistance to stains from coffee and tea.

And here are the disadvantages:

  • Since a portion of the enamel is taken, the process isn’t reversible.
  • Once it’s cemented, the color is not able to be corrected.
  • You may experience some sensitivity in your teeth after the procedure.
  • While veneers are durable, they can break easily if you chew on ice or bite your fingernails.

Remember to keep these factors in mind when considering to get porcelain veneers.
