Most dentists today utilize cosmetic dentistry techniques instead of the old metal fillings, helping to give their patients a more natural smile simply by using porcelain or other types of composite materials that are much closer to the natural color and shade of their teeth. A lot of patients that received the old-style metal fillings have elected to replace those fillings with the newer natural-colored fillings to enhance their smile.
New Trends in Cosmetic Dentistry
Due in large part to all of the technological advancements made to the materials used for most cosmetic treatments, many patients that elect to have cosmetic work done today are finding that it is much more durable than work they may have had in the past. In addition to improvements made in the materials, most dentists are using much more conservative approaches and techniques in cosmetic dentistry, allowing the patient to retain as much natural tooth structure as possible for their particular situation.
New super high-tech equipment such as lasers may even be used in order to complete many of the more popular cosmetic treatments in-office without having to refer patients to cosmetic specialists. This is beneficial to the patients in a couple of ways, including convenience, comfort and a reduction in overall recovery time following the procedure. Common Cosmetic Treatments
The most widely used cosmetic dentistry treatments today are:
Inlays and Onlays
These are also sometimes referred to as "indirect fillings", and are made out of porcelain or other natural-looking cosmetic materials which are built to last and add a "filling" to the patient's tooth without causing any structural damage to the tooth itself. Traditional fillings for tooth decay are generally molded into place during the visit to the dentist's office, while inlays and onlays are professionally created and then fitted and bonded in-place later by your dentist.
Composite Bonding
This method is used to repair a tooth that has been chipped, broken, decayed or even discolored in order to improve its appearance. The bonding is made using a composite material that gives the appearance of enamel and dentin, which is then applied to either the surface of the tooth or wherever the damage is, and is then sculpted into shape, contoured to match the neighboring teeth and finally a high-intensity light is used to harden the material. Patients that choose this type of work will see positive results that will blend in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth and tooth structure, giving a good-looking and healthy smile.
Whitening Treatments
This is perhaps the most widely used procedure in cosmetic dentistry today. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, various foods and drinks such as red wine, tea or coffee can stain teeth over time. You can brighten and enhance your smile simply by having your teeth bleached.
Veneers
Porcelain or composite material laminates are bonded with an adhesive to the tooth's surface as a means of covering up and correcting chips, cracks, worn or even severely discolored teeth. Veneers are also an excellent method to use if other teeth-whitening treatments were unsuccessful or if you have gaps between your teeth.
Dental Implants
The use of dental implants is warranted as a means of artificial or prosthetic dentistry in order to replace a missing or severely damaged tooth. Dental implants can give the patient a much nicer, cleaner smile and can enhance their appearance, as replacing missing teeth can make a person look much younger.
The Smile Makeover
This is perhaps the most comprehensive and complete treatment that you can receive if you feel that you need to improve your overall smile. A Smile Makeover will generally include two or more cosmetic procedures such as implants, veneers, teeth whitening or gingival sculpting on both the lower and upper arches in order to improve and enhance the entire smile of the patient.
Full Reconstruction
In some cases a Smile Makeover just isn't enough to improve the complete aesthetic appearance of the patient and the dentist may realize that additional work must be done to correct the actual function of the bone structure, muscles, teeth or bite. Fortunately, there are many new and advanced materials available today for the dentist to use to give long-lasting, clinically sound and functional treatments that will both look and feel natural.
There are many cosmetic dentistry options available for patients that are embarrassed or unhappy with the way their smile looks. If you suffer from any of the issues mentioned above, please take a look at our detailed articles that focus on the various treatments available for today's most advanced and comprehensive cosmetic procedures.
