In order to stay healthy, most people take medications in some form
or the other. Whether you take over-the-counter medications for
allergies or drugs prescribed by your doctor for high blood pressure or
to prevent seizures, your dentist can tell you that there are many drugs
that have side effects that negatively affect the teeth and overall
dental health.
Some of the issues that drugs cause include:
· Many drugs like antihistamines can decrease the amount of saliva,
resulting in dry mouse. Persistent dry mouth can cause inflammation in
the gums, infection, and pain, as well as tooth decay.
· Overgrowth of the gum tissues can be caused by drugs that are calcium
channel blockers used to control blood pressure and by some anti-seizure
drugs.
· Other drugs that treat high blood pressure, oral contraceptives, and
some chemotherapy drugs can cause sores in the mouse, inflammation, or
discoloration of the gums.
· Aspirin and prescription anticoagulants can cause abnormal bleeding of
the gums.
· Certain products that contain tetracycline can permanently stain the
teeth.
People who take any of these medications and have seen some of the
negative side effects should talk to their dentist about what they can
do to limit these effects or to correct the problems. While it is
important to take care of your physical health, it shouldn’t be done at
the expense of your dental health.
