10 Benefits of Dental Implants

dental-implants-before-after
Dental implants are essentially complete artificial teeth. These are distinguished from crowns put in during root canals and other procedures in that root canals and the like usually manipulate and partially restore a natural tooth. Dental implants "start from scratch" and assume a missing tooth. Though a cosmetic procedure, dental implants have quite a few benefits. Some of them are as follows:
  1. A finished dental implant appears virtually identical to a natural tooth. Natural appearance leads to a psychological boost and social confidence. Like it or not, such factors have some effect on professional success and how smoothly one can navigate social functions.
  2. Dental implants work like real teeth. Since a prosthodontist will customize the crown to match the overall contour of your teeth and bite, the implant will allow speech and chewing much as one could perform with natural teeth.
  3. Conceptual simplicity. Dental implants consist of three parts: the implant, abutment and crown. The implant is made to fuse with bone and gum tissue, performing the same function as a periodontal ligament in a natural tooth. The crown is the most prominent, visible part that is customized to give a natural and functional appearance. Abutment connects the crown and implant, making sure that the crown does not rub against the implant or surrounding gum tissue.
  4. Support for surrounding teeth. Over time, gaps in a smile lead to neighboring teeth slowly "wandering" out of alignment. This is a process that takes years, but it can have an effect. Without neighboring structures, like jawbone, natural teeth or dental implants, otherwise healthy teeth can become significantly misaligned and require treatments for realignment. If this is the case with molars, the difficulty and cost to the patient is generally increased since back teeth are more difficult to access, evaluate and manipulate.
  5. Relating to the previous point, teeth that are misaligned are less likely to receive proper cleaning since toothbrushes and floss may not reach all parts of a mis-aligned tooth. You can see how this leads to problems with potential infections and cavities. Dental implants avoid this difficulty as well.
  6. Though dental implants are durable, they are not perfect. However, this is often a benefit. Acidic residue from food as well as mechanical stress can eventually degrade the crown portion of a dental implant. Considering the sizable cost of quality dental implants, it pays to be diligent in maintaining good oral hygiene to get the most for your dental implant investment. Such diligence will of course spill over into better overall oral health.
  7. Fixed cost of a given dental implant gives a certainty that escapes shorter-term treatments. Dental implants are not the only option for those who need to restore natural tooth function and appearance. However, the other options, such as bridges, do not have quite the same resilience and durability profile as do dental implants. Total visits and money spent could in fact be higher with "cheaper" options than with a steeper, but far more dependable investment in dental implants.
  8. Maintain jawbone strength. The jawbone is naturally shaped to accommodate teeth. With a tooth missing, the gap left behind in the bone and gum tissue can weaken jawbone structure. A dental implant returns the proper, healthy pressure needed to maintain jawbone strength.
  9. Removable dentures are exposed to the outside environment. Dental implants are fixed in the mouth, preventing most of the external bacteria from gaining a significant foothold on the implant.
  10. High success rates are a feature of dental implants. Other cosmetic dentistry treatments can be successful, but not as reliably so as dental implants.
