What are dental implants? Ten things you don’t know about dental implants.

dental implants

Dental implants provide an artificial foundation for replacement teeth. It should be noted that dental implants are not the only way to restore a "normal smile" or optimal chewing/speech capacity. However, you should know that restoring such functions without dental implants is not easy and, even if achieved, such restoration tends to be temporary. Dental implants will not have that issue. Quality dental implants have ten distinguishing features.

  1. Dental implants are made for durability. They are designed to fuse with natural tissue in gums; therefore, they will not come loose over time.
  2. Your chewing and talking capacity will improve to the point that dental implants could be indistinguishable from natural teeth.
  3. Dental implants are made for comfort. Despite the procedure's apparent harshness, the result is that implants are tailored for each patient's mouth, resulting in a perfect fit.
  4. An implant operation takes several months to complete. The steps involved are separated to allow time for healing and proper monitoring of oral health during and after the procedure.
  5. Though artificial, dental implants require oral hygiene much like regular teeth. Not only is this beneficial for implant function itself, but it also helps keep surrounding teeth and gum tissue healthy.
  6. Not everyone is eligible for dental implants. Depending on overall oral health, drug/alcohol use and jaw bone structure, some people may not benefit from a dental implant.
  7. The success rate for dental implants is high, but it is not a guarantee. Even the best materials and medical professionals are fallible. Dental implants are a surgical procedure and should be thought of as such.
  8. Greater initial cost is worth it. Quality and price move up and down together in terms of dental implants, as in virtually all aspects of life. Make sure dental insurance and associated finances are in order before undergoing a dental implant operation.
  9. Though implants are made of strong materials, they do have some weaknesses. Excessive mechanical stress or an acidic oral environment can degrade implant performance.
  10. Though all implants are long-term solutions to missing teeth, implant position in the mouth can make a significant difference in how long an implant remains functional.

Overall, dental implants are a great investment for those needing substantial tooth replacements. Prospective implant candidates need to keep in mind that dental implant procedures take time and close coordination with dental staff. After completing a dental implant procedure, oral hygiene, dental visits and regular cleaning should remain a priority. While dental implants offer a higher cost-higher performance option compared to bridges or removable dentures, they also incorporate a unique level of risk. This risk comes from the necessary invasiveness and relatively high amount of surgical operation needed to properly install a dental implant. Lastly, financial and insurance considerations need to be taken into account. While policies and coverage will differ, those interested in a dental implant should prepare for the possibility of dental implant operations being classified as a cosmetic procedure. This will mean that the financial burden will be on the patient, not so much on the insurer.
