Who Is A Candidate For Dental Implants?

If you have missing teeth like millions of others, but you dislike the thought of dentures and bridges, then dental implants may be a good option for you. Dental implants feel, look, and function like your natural teeth, but they're permanently affixed so they won't slip or slide or fall out.

Is Everyone A Good Candidate For Dental Implants?

Most people who are sufficiently healthy for routine dental treatments are healthy enough for a dental implant. Healthy teeth and gums are mandatory, and patients should have enough jawbone to support the implant. If not, however, then a bone graft can add the necessary bone to the jaw. It's also imperative that patients practice good oral hygiene, especially after they receive the implant. Regular habits of brushing at least twice daily, flossing at least once daily, and at least annual dental cleanings and checkups will keep your gums and teeth in the best health possible. Additionally, you should be at least 18 years old, in overall good health, and not pregnant. If you're pregnant, it's best to wait until after delivery before beginning the implant procedure. It's important to wait until you're at least 18 years old to ensure that your bones have stopped growing. Some health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension may be acceptable as long as they're controlled by medication. The prosthodontist needs to know about all medications that you take, especially if you take blood thinners, so be sure to disclose that information during the initial consultation. Those who smoke heavily or have uncontrolled hypertension or cardiovascular disease may not be good candidates for the implant procedure, but they'll be evaluated by the prosthodontist. There are other caveats, but they'll be discussed during your initial consultation in our West Los Angeles office. Those who are considering dental implants should also be patient and dedicated to achieving the outcome. The dental implant procedure involves several steps, may involve several procedures and office visits, and can take as little as one office visit or as long as a year, depending on the complexity of your dental implant procedure.

What's The Implant Procedure?

  • During your initial consultation, your prosthodontist will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums to determine the best course of treatment.
  • We'll provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan and cost breakdown.
  • If you need a bone graft or other treatments, then those will be done first.
  • When your gums have healed from the treatments, you'll return and we'll place the titanium post in your jawbone. If you need more than one, they'll all be placed during the same procedure.
  • When your post has osseointegrated, which should take a few months, you'll return and we'll place your abutment.
  • In about two weeks, the abutment incision should have healed, you'll return to our office, and we'll permanently affix your crown to the abutment.

Since your crown will be the same color and shape as your natural teeth, no one will know that it's an artificial tooth. It will look, function, and feel like your natural tooth and you won't need to remove it for maintenance.

Is The Procedure Painful?

You'll receive a local anesthetic during the procedures and most people report that they experienced very little discomfort. Any residual pain is usually managed by over-the-counter pain medications. Implant surgery is one of the most successful dental procedures that we perform, and most of our patients are very happy that they opted for implants. The benefits include:

  • Clear speech
  • Improved appearance
  • Easier chewing and biting
  • Better oral health
  • More comfort
  • More self-confidence

After The Implant Procedure

After your implant procedure has been completed, be sure to maintain a regimen of good oral hygiene and your implant should last for decades or a lifetime.
